How do I… · Codex and research

How do I jot down an idea without leaving my chapter?

A quick note catches a passing thought in a few keystrokes and files it on Note Cards, so you can keep writing.

Steps

  1. While writing, press ⌘⌥I (Ctrl+Alt+I on Windows and Linux), then N. A small Note box opens over the page.

  2. Type your idea. To start a new line, hold Shift as you press Return.

Return adds the note; Esc closes the box.
  3. Press Return. A message says Added to Note Cards, with Open if you want to see it.

  4. To read and tidy your notes, choose View ▸ Inspector ▸ Show Notes and click the Note Cards tab.

Your newest note is at the bottom.
  5. On Note Cards, double-click a card to change it, drag cards to reorder them, or right-click to delete one.

  6. The same cards are on the Note Cards board, first under Idea Boards in the sidebar.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • Carry on writing, then come back to Note Cards and check your idea is there.
