How do I… · Codex and research

How do I find a note or piece of research again?

Search looks through the whole project, including chapters, research notes and Codex entries, so you can find something by any word you remember.

Steps

  1. Choose View ▸ Sidebar ▸ Show Search or press ⇧⌘F (Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows and Linux).

  2. Type any word you remember from the note. Results are grouped by file, with research notes showing their place under research/.

Results show which file and line matched.
  3. If you get too many results, use the three small buttons under the box: Aa matches case, \b matches whole words, and .* lets you search with a pattern.

  4. Click a result to open the note with the match selected.

The note opens at the match.
  5. Quick notes live on Note Cards (View ▸ Inspector ▸ Show Notes), and Codex details show in Search too.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • Do another task for a while, then try to find your note again using only a word from it, not its title or location.
