How do I… · Codex and research

How do I look something up in the Codex while I'm writing?

Find a character's details, or every place they appear, without losing your place in the chapter.

Steps

  1. With a chapter open, choose View ▸ Sidebar ▸ Show Search or press ⇧⌘F (Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows and Linux).

  2. Type a detail you remember, such as a job or a place name. Codex matches are listed first, with the field they're in.

Search looks inside Codex fields as well as chapters.
  3. Click the result to open the entry in a new tab. Your chapter stays open in its own tab.

  4. To jump to an entry by name, choose View ▸ Incanta Menu… or press ⌘⇧. (Alt+Shift+. on Windows and Linux), type the name and press Return.

Incanta finds any entry or chapter by name.
  5. On the entry, click Appearances to see every place the name turns up in your chapters, with a chart by chapter.

Appearances shows each mention in context.
  6. Click a line under Appearances to go to that spot in the chapter.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • Change a detail on an entry's Profile, go back to your chapter, and use Search to find the new wording.
