How do I… · Writing

How do I change a name everywhere in my project?

Replace Across Project finds every mention of a name in the book, the Codex and your research, and lets you accept or reject each change before anything is written.

Before you start

  • Save any open chapters first.

Steps

  1. Press ⌘P / Ctrl+P to open Incanta, type Replace Across Project and press Enter.

Replace Across Project is a command in Incanta.
  2. Type the name you want to replace and press OK. It matches whole words with the same capitals.

First the old name, then the new one.
  3. Type the new name and press OK.

  4. A review tab opens with every mention, file by file, showing the line before and after.

  5. Press Reject on any mention you want to keep, such as one in a research note. Rejected lines are crossed out, and the count at the top updates.

  6. Press Accept All to change the rest.

Only the mentions you haven't rejected are changed.
  7. A message says how many references were updated in how many files.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • Search for the old name: only the mentions you rejected should remain.
  • Search for the new name and check each place reads correctly.
  • Text that only contains the old name inside a longer word is unchanged.
