How do I… · Getting started

How do I start a new project?

Create a new project folder for a book, write in it, then close it and open it again.

Before you start

  • A title for the project. A practice title is fine; you can delete the folder later.

Steps

  1. Choose File ▸ New Project… (⌘N / Ctrl+N). If no project is open, you can click New Project instead.

With no project open, New Project, Open Project, Import… and Clone… are in the middle of the window.
  2. Under Name your project, type a Title. PugWriter fills in the Folder name for you. Click Next.

The project is created inside your writing projects folder.
  3. Under What are you writing?, pick Fiction or Non-fiction, then the kind, for example Novel. Click Next.

  4. Choose a Genre, and any Sub-genres if you like, clicking Next after each.

  5. Under Writing goals, tick or untick Enable writing goals for this project. Click Next.

  6. Check the summary under Review & create, then click Create project. The project opens.

Review & create lists the title, location, type, genre and goals.
  7. Add a chapter, or open one from the Manuscript section of the sidebar, and write a paragraph. PugWriter saves as you type.

  8. Choose File ▸ Close Project (⇧⌘W / Ctrl+Shift+W).

  9. Open it again: click it under Recent, or choose File ▸ Open Recent.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • Your paragraph is still there, word for word, after you close and reopen the project.
  • The status bar said Saved on this computer before you closed it.
