How do I… · Getting started

How do I install PugWriter and sign in?

Download the desktop app, install it, sign in with your PugWriter.com email and make the three first-run choices.

Before you start

  • A PugWriter.com account, using the email you signed up or bought with.
  • A Mac with Apple silicon, a Windows PC, or a Linux PC.

Steps

  1. On PugWriter.com, sign in and open your Account page. Download the installer for your computer.

  2. Install it the usual way for your computer. On a Mac, open the .dmg and drag PugWriter to Applications. On Windows, run the .exe. On Linux, use the AppImage or the .deb.

  3. Open PugWriter. Until you sign in, a band at the foot of the window says Sign in to start writing.

  4. Click Sign in with email. Your web browser opens so you can sign in to PugWriter.com.

Sign in with email is on the band at the foot of the window.
  5. Sign in in the browser, then come back to PugWriter. The status bar now shows your name and your license.

Once you're signed in, your license and your name show in the status bar.
  6. On the Welcome tab, under Choose your writing folder, click Use this folder, or Choose a different folder… to pick another one.

New projects go in this folder. You can change it later in App Settings.
  7. Under Choose whether to use AI, pick Off or AI assistance, then click Continue. Both work fully, and you can change your mind in App Settings.

Off means no AI controls appear and nothing is sent to an AI service.
  8. Under Choose where your book is backed up, pick This computer only or Back up with GitHub, then click Continue.

  9. A short tour, Welcome to PugWriter, follows. Click Next to go through it, or Skip tour.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • The band at the foot of the window has gone, and the status bar shows your name.
  • Quit PugWriter and open it again. You should still be signed in.
