How do I… · Organizing

How do I move around and search a long book quickly?

Check how big your project is, jump to any chapter by name and search the whole project, so a long manuscript stays easy to work in.

Before you start

  • A project open in PugWriter. If you want to try this on a large book, work on a copy.

Steps

  1. To see how big the project is, click the dashboard button beside the PUGWRITER title. The WORDS and CHAPTERS boxes show the totals.

The dashboard shows the size of the whole project.
  2. To jump to a chapter, press ⌘P / Ctrl+P (or choose View ▸ Incanta Menu…), type a few letters of its title and press Return.

Type part of a title, then press Return to open it.
  3. To fold away parts you are not working on, click the arrow beside a part in the MANUSCRIPT section. Click it again to unfold it.

  4. To search the whole project, choose View ▸ Sidebar ▸ Show Search (⇧⌘F / Ctrl+Shift+F) and type a word or phrase. Results appear as you type, grouped by file.

  5. Click a result line. The chapter opens with the match highlighted.

Click a line to open the chapter at that spot.
  6. To search only the chapter in front of you, choose Edit ▸ Find (⌘F / Ctrl+F).

  7. To check a chapter's size, look at the word count in the status bar, or choose View ▸ Inspector ▸ Show Review in Inspector for words, pages and reading time.

The Review panel and the status bar both follow the open chapter.
  8. For more room to write, hide the side panels with View ▸ Toggle Primary Sidebar (⌘B / Ctrl+B) and View ▸ Toggle Inspector (⌥⌘B / Ctrl+Alt+B).

  9. To get the chapter list back after searching, choose View ▸ Sidebar ▸ Show PugWriter (⇧⌘E / Ctrl+Shift+E).

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • The chapter you picked in Incanta opens straight away.
  • Clicking a search result opens the right chapter at the match.
  • The status bar word count changes as you type.
