How do I back up my project and restore it?

PugWriter can keep verified backup copies of your whole project and restore any of them into a new folder, without touching the project you're working on.

Before you start

  • The project open in PugWriter.
  • Somewhere to keep backups away from this computer if you can, such as an external drive or a synced folder.

Steps

  1. Click the Settings gear at the bottom of the activity bar.

Settings is the gear at the bottom left.
  2. Choose Project Settings, then the Writing tab.

Backups live on the Writing tab.
  3. Scroll to Rotating Backups. Leave Back up changed projects automatically ticked, and pick how long to wait after you stop typing.

  4. Under Location, press Choose… to keep backups on another drive or a synced folder. A warning appears if they are on the same drive as the project.

  5. Press Back Up Now. When it's done, the line beside it says Last verified with the date and time.

Back Up Now makes a verified copy straight away.
  6. To restore, find the backup under Restore points and press Restore to New Folder….

  7. Pick a folder to restore into. PugWriter makes a new folder there named after the project, with Restored and the date. Your current project isn't changed.

The restored copy goes into a new folder; the message shows where.
  8. To look at the restored copy, choose File ▸ Open Project… and pick the new folder.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • In the restored copy, open a few chapters and compare their text with the original.
  • Check the chapter order, front and back matter, Codex entries, research notes and images are all there.
  • The restored copy has your files but not your History recovery points, which stay with the original project.
