How do I plan scenes on the Plot Grid and move them around?
The Plot Grid lays out your plotlines against your chapters, with a card for each scene or beat, so you can plan a stretch of the book and rearrange it by dragging.
Before you start
- A project to plan in. To practise, use the sample project or a copy.
Steps
In the sidebar, under Plot & Structure, click Plot map (or click the Plot & Structure header).
Plot map opens the Plot Grid for the current draft. For more room, press Focus at the top right of the page to hide both sidebars. Press it again to bring the toolbar back, and once more to show everything.
Find the plotline row and the chapter column where the scene belongs. Point at the empty spot and press the + (Add a card here).
Each plotline is a row and each chapter a column. Type what happens in the scene. Check Where, Plotlines and the line “Will appear in…”, then press Done (or ⌘Return / Ctrl+Return).
The line above the buttons says where the card will appear. Add a few more cards for the sequence you're planning.
To rearrange, drag a card to another chapter column or another plotline row. Dragging a card never moves your written text.
Drag cards between chapters and plotlines to try a new order. To read the plan as a list, choose Outline at the top left. Each chapter shows its cards in order. Choose Plot Grid to go back.
Outline shows the same cards chapter by chapter. To try a different order without losing this one, press the + on the Plot & Structure header (New experiment).
Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.
Check it worked
- Open a chapter you planned and choose View ▸ Inspector ▸ Show Outline to see its cards beside the text (see “How do I see a chapter's plan while I write?”).
- Use Undo on the Plot Grid toolbar after a drag, and check the card goes back.
