How do I… · AI

How do I get an AI suggestion without losing control of my text?

Ask the AI to proofread a passage, compare its suggestion with your words, and accept, dismiss or undo it. Nothing changes until you accept.

Before you start

  • AI switched on and a provider connected. See "How do I turn on AI and connect a provider?"
  • A passage to try it on. A sample project or a copy of your chapter is safest the first time.

Steps

  1. Select the passage you want checked, from a sentence to a paragraph.

  2. Press ⌘J / Ctrl+J. The AI bar opens above your selection. You can also right-click and choose AI Assist ▸ Proofread.

The AI bar works only on what you selected.
  3. If you like, choose how much of your outline goes with the request: Off, Nearest or Full, beside Outline.

  4. Press Proofread. Your text stays as it is while you wait.

  5. Compare the suggestion on the Proofread · Take 1 card with your text.

The suggestion waits on a card until you decide.
  6. Press the tick (Accept) to use it or the cross (Dismiss) to drop it. Riff asks for a fresh take, More options adds more takes to choose from, and Cancel closes them all.

  7. When you accept, your selection is replaced and Proofread applied appears.

    Only the selected text changed.
  8. Changed your mind? Press ⌘Z / Ctrl+Z. Your original words come back.

Undo brings back exactly what you had.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • While the card is open, the chapter text has not changed.
  • After accepting, only the selected passage differs.
  • After ⌘Z / Ctrl+Z, the passage matches your original word for word.
  • The request shows under TRANSCRIPTS in the AI sidebar.
