How do I… · Exporting

How do I export my book to Word?

Make a .docx file of your book, either a standard submission manuscript, a formatted book or a review copy, to open in Word or another word processor.

Before you start

  • A project open in PugWriter.
  • A word processor that opens .docx files, such as Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Pages or Google Docs.

Steps

  1. Choose File ▸ Export… (⌥⌘E / Ctrl+Alt+E). The Exports page opens.

  2. Under Ready-made exports, press Set up beside Shunn Submission. The export opens on its own page. Next time, press Open there instead.

Set up a ready-made export once, then reuse it.
  3. On the Setup tab, check Include. Leave it on The whole manuscript, or pick a smaller part from the list.

  4. Open the Formats tab and choose a Word document purpose: Submission manuscript (Shunn) for agents and editors, Formatted book manuscript for book-style typesetting, or Review document (comments and tracked changes) for a copy with your comments.

Pick what the Word file is for, then export.
  5. Press Export Word.

  6. Read the publishing check. Each item says What it means and How to fix it, and Open source takes you to the passage. Nothing has been saved yet.

Warnings explain themselves before anything is written.
  7. Fix anything you want to, then press Export Word again. Or press Acknowledge and export to write the file as it stands.

Warnings don't stop the export; you decide.
  8. When the Exported message appears, press Show in Folder. Each export has its own folder inside the project's exports folder, and every file is named with the date and time, so older files are kept.

Show in Folder opens the folder that holds the new file.
  9. Open the .docx file in your word processor.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • Each chapter starts on a new page, with its title set as a heading.
  • Italics, bold and scene breaks look as they do in PugWriter.
  • Pictures appear where they are in the chapters.
  • Footnotes sit at the foot of the page, or wherever you chose under Notes go.
  • A submission or formatted copy leaves out your comments and flags. Choose Review document to include them.
