How do I… · Exporting

How do I export my book as an ebook (EPUB)?

Make an EPUB file of your book with its cover and contents, ready to read in Apple Books, Kobo, Calibre or another ebook reader.

Before you start

  • A project open in PugWriter.
  • Optional: a cover image for the ebook.
  • An ebook reader app to check the result, such as Apple Books, Kobo, Calibre or Thorium.

Steps

  1. Choose File ▸ Export… (⌥⌘E / Ctrl+Alt+E). The Exports page opens.

  2. Under Ready-made exports, press Set up beside EPUB Ebook. The export opens on its own page.

EPUB Ebook is ready to export once it is set up.
  3. Open the Formats tab. Under Digital cover, press Add a cover… and choose an image. Without one, the EPUB has no cover in stores or readers.

Add a cover, choose where notes go, then export.
  4. Choose where notes go under Notes go. An ebook has no fixed pages, so notes go at the end of the chapter or the book.

  5. Press Export EPUB.

  6. Read the publishing check. Fix anything you want to, or press Acknowledge and export to write the file as it stands.

Warnings explain themselves; they don't stop the export.
  7. When the Exported message appears, press Show in Folder.

Every export is kept, named with its date and time.
  8. Open the .epub file in your ebook reader.

Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.

Check it worked

  • The table of contents lists the parts and chapters in manuscript order. For the sample: Before the Season, Part One: Low Water (The Wintering, Carrow Light, The Fourth Lens), Part Two: The Turning (The Hearing, Osprey), After, Afterword and About the Author.
  • Tapping a contents entry goes to that chapter.
  • Changing the text size in the reader reflows the text without losing your place.
  • Pictures appear where they are in the chapters and fit the screen.
  • The cover shows in the reader's library, if you added one.
