How do I work with several books in one project?
A project can hold a whole series: each book keeps its own manuscript, drafts and front and back matter, while the Codex and research are shared.
Before you start
- A project with more than one book. To turn a one-book project into a series, press + (Add book) at the top of the Drafts panel.
Steps
Show the PugWriter sidebar (the book icon at the top of the activity bar, or ⇧⌘E / Ctrl+Shift+E).
In the Manuscript section, each book has its own heading, such as Book 1: The Sounding Line, with its current draft beside it.
Every book has its own Front Matter, Body and Back Matter. Open a book's Front Matter or Back Matter group to see the pages that belong to that book only, such as its title page and dedication.
Click the Drafts icon in the activity bar. The panel lists every book with its drafts, the one marked Current first.
Click a book's title, for example Winter Ordinary, to make it the book you are working in.
Click a book's title to work in that book. Go back to the PugWriter sidebar. The chip beside Manuscript now names the book you are working in. New chapters and Start New Draft act on that book.
The chip shows which book you are working in. To see or change a book's own details, right-click its title in the Drafts panel and choose Open Book.
Open Book shows that book's own page. The book's page shows its chapter and draft counts and its Identity: Title, Subtitle, Series and Number in series. Changes here affect this book only.
Each book has its own title, subtitle and place in the series.
Click a screenshot to see it larger, then use the arrow keys to step through them.
Check it worked
- Open a chapter in each book and check the chip beside Manuscript follows you.
- Each book's Front Matter and Back Matter list only that book's pages.
- Codex entries, such as characters and places, are shared by every book in the series.
